Feb 21 (Fri): Unprecedented detention of 6 persons unjustifiably arrested has continued / “Mr. Gate Front” stopped dangerous left turn of the dump trucks at Awa

The 6 (the number was corrected from 5 to 6) persons who were unjustifiably arrested on Feb 19 have been continuously held in custody of police. It is customary for such case to be released within 48 hours after the arrest, but it seems that the police plans to detain them longer. They were arrested on a charge of entering to the U.S. Northern Training Area in Takae, but there are no fences or signs that show the boundary line. Is it a crime if someone mistakenly enters into a military base during a walk ? Besides that, the incident occurred more than three months ago. An lawyer said, “It is an unprecedented arrest for such case. There is no reason for detainment.” It could be a stron-arm crackdown on “5-days Intensive Action” which will start on Feb 25.
The Intensive Acation will be held, as planned from Feb 25. An exchange meeting for the paticipants will be held in Nago City on the previous day, Feb 24. Being filled with indignation against the unjustifiable arrest, our rally will be intensive.

About 20 protestors staged a sit-in and were removed three times; in the morning, noon, and in the afternoon. 187 vehicles including concrete-mixer trucks delivered the material into the military base.

Hiroji Yamashiro, who has been continuously engaged in the protest against the construction of a Japan’s SDF (Self-Defense Forces) missile base in Miyako Island, came to the Pier after a long absence. He was shocked at the situation at Awa where dump trucks were entering both from left and right sides, which was not the case in several months ago. He made a vigorous protest against the riot police. “If you leave more dump trucks making the left turn to enter the pier, we will conduct a sit-in protest.”
Five police officers, baffled by his strong protest, retired into the pier grounds. Dump trucks that had been wating for making the left turn, gave up and passed in front of the gate one by one. “Mr. Gate Front”, well done! There were no dump trucks making the left turn in the afternoon. However, it is not sure what will happen tommorow.
The pier could not be used because the cargo ships were being loaded with coal, which is the main business of Ryukyu Cement Company. Therefore, no loading of earth/sand to carriers was made.
Earthl/sand of 550 truckloads were added to the storage pile in the stock yard.

(Shiokawa Pier at Motobu Port)
Eight members of the Shimagurumi group in Motobu Town continued the protest by roaming within the pier grounds. For only 8 persons, about 50 civilian security guards and three police officers attended for close monitoring. Is there any public work guarded by such a large number of security staff? Earth/sand of 449 truckoads were loaded to the carriers.
